UNAP UConn-Guanin La Piedra: The Primary Care Unit that Revives Hope
March 28, 2025

La Piedra, Municipality of Guerra , Dominican Republic– After nearly two years of closure, this March marks a milestone with the reopening of UNAP UConn-Guanin La Piedra, a primary care center dedicated to serving a community of approximately 1,700 families, where extreme poverty prevails.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers doctors from the Air Force Hospital, including Dr. Cabrera , Dr. Ventura, and Nurse Nathayli Ortiz, over 700 Families received care during this inaugural event. Services covered broad areas of health, such as general medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, electrocardiogram studies, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and home visits.
This achievement reflects the dedication and commitment of healthcare professionals to the families who need it most. However, this reopening alone is not enough to meet the extensive demands and shortages of the community. For this reason, through this statement, a call is made to President Dr. Luis Abinader’s government to consider the critical situation faced by La Piedra. It is imperative to ensure essential and equitable services to improve the quality of life for these families.
UNAP UConn-Guanin La Piedra stands as a symbol of hope, but governmental action remains vital to continue this mission of health and well-being in a community that deserves more.
