Social/Education program in la Piedra community.

Volunteer site program.

La piedra is small community 45 minutes from the City Santo Domingo and 15 minutes to la Caleta, the entrance of the International airport de las America.

LA PIEDRA-background history and most urgent current needs.

Some of the oldest residents here remember life in La Piedra (its name, appropriately, translates as "The Rock") in the 1940s, around 70 years ago, when all the nearby Ingenio San Luis sugar lands and the undeveloped lands around them were a small part of the vast estates of "El Presidente" Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, the fierce dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930-1961. After Trujillo´s assassination in May of 1961, the Dominican government laid claim to all the surrounding land and promptly sold thousands of square meters of it to an international or U.S.

AMONG LA PIEDRA'S MOST PRESSING GENERAL NEEDS ARE:

--A census so we know how many people in what age and gender categories are living in the region.

--Latrines that will not allow waste materials to leach into and contaminate the ground water. (The fresh water in the limestone basins below La Piedra is part of a vast aquifer that provides drinking water to the Capital.) Today most residents just dump urine and feces into large pits or holes in the limestone outcroppings around their homes.

--Pumps to bring water to the homes of the residents. Today, residents must either carry water home in buckets from public taps that are scattered around the district, or pay to have their water barrels filled by the tank trucks that provide this service; the US$1.50 per 50-gallon tank charge is beyond the reach of many of La Piedra's residents. Access to water is necessary for showers, laundry, and cooking, as well as to irrigate the crops that most families have planted on their land. It can also be treated (boiled or sanitized with a few drops of chlorine) to provide drinking water.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Here we will have the Summer Camp for 100 kids

-- We need 3 Big tents for the classroom and leaving-room

-- Basketball and Volleybal Courts

-- Baseball field and recreation area

--The children of La Piedra need books, notebooks, pencils, crayons, paper…

--They need tutors who can read and write in Spanish and English, for most of their parents cannot, so cannot help them with their homework. --They would love to learn English so they can "get a better job" when they grow up.

--Sports equipment and coaches would also be a blessing, for there is little for them to do after school.

--Some of the children have birth defects, illnesses, allergies, and are malnourished. A medical clinic is one of the region's major needs.

-- Latrine project, we can construct these latrines for approximately US$150 each-the cost of the required cement, wood, zinc, and nails for each latrine
